Last day in Comp III

Most people will be cramming for their finals right now, but the class is half filled right now and it seems that everyone here is continuing to blog.  As usual Campos and Fugina are going at it.  Eric is a bit quieter today (maybe he is sick), and I am sure that today will be bitter sweet.  I am sure that we are all glad and sad at the same time, but this journey continues and will resume in three weeks.  I plan on getting as much R&R as possible.  I wish you all luck and hope that you all enjoy your time off.  Take care, keep in touch it you wish,  and enjoy. Continue to Blog on....

Decisive

I was told to write about being decisive, I have writers block.  I think that is being indecisive.  If you know me at all, you know I am not indecisive and never get writers block.  I had fun in this class sitting next to Mrs. Campos and Fugina, they are trouble. Actually they interact like a married couple.  They bicker but it is out of love.  I sit here and listen to them and laugh inside all the time and Eric sits behind me and some of the thinks he has shared out loud are only things I would think in my own mind but never say out loud.  Overall it was a fun and a good time in class.

Final Week

It has been a pleasure knowing everyone in class.  I have met some really cool people and made some great friendship bonds.  I have enjoyed not only my classmates but being in Professor Hamon's company.  He is truely a visonary that brings the evolution of teaching up to speed.  This "flipped classroom" comcept may not be his idea, but it is his baby.  I have enjoyed it because not only is time efficient, and productive, but it works.  Then putting our assignments on Google Drive, is the means to giving us the tools, technology, and equipment to actually do our work practically from anywhere.  Being able to use our cell phones, laptops, or the desktops and access our work without the use of a thumb drive.  Technology is a wonderful thing once you figure out how to use it.  I have enjoyed this experience.  I actually feel like I have learned so many things that I can actually apply from this class.  I did not feel totally lost or like I learnd something that I will never use.  I am using everything now as often as possible.  Thanks for having a wonderful teacher and some awesome classmates.  I hope to see you all in the future.

Google +

Google + was the one thing we did in class that I probably used the least.  I really did not play around with it enough.  I am glad that I did go on it the one time the homework assesment was on there and not on the wiki.  I am sure as time goes on though I will explorte Google+ more but for now I probably will not bother with it much.  I am loving the other google stuff though.

Syria

I love to blog now.  I love to talk and write about things anyway so blogging is good for me.  I recently posted how I felt about our country intervening in Syria on another page.  One of my friends asked me, "are you not afraid of government retaliation?"  I have to say absolutely not.  We have certain freedoms and freedom of speech is one of them.  I have to right to express my opinion.  The things I put on my Facebook blog page a usually controversial or educational.  I really express myself and sometimes say things that other people think but will never voice publicly.
After doing some research I found that the Syria thing is mainly over a treaty we have with the UN.  We have to uphold it against anyone that uses dirty war tactics.  Gas and dirty bombs are a big NO, NO on their agenda.  The USA being a police state has to intervene and give Syria a slap on the wrist.  About 1000 people were subjected to the gas by the Syrian government but daily that same government kills 1000 people daily and nothing is done about it.  Soon as the gas killed people now it is an act of war.  We are getting involved in their civil war and we should stay out of it in my opinion.
Another thing is that Russia, Turkey, and Iran are aiding Syria.  Since these countries are communist we have to intervene against the Syrian government.  Our government's job is to uphold freedom and democracy around the world.  So we are aiding the rebels hoping that they can overthrow their government in Syria.
My only fear in our involvement is that Russia, Iran, and Turkey already have air support, ships, and troops in the area.  If we attack them, it may bring about a third world war.  Are we not fighting enough people already?  I voiced my opinion and that is what it is.  I have seen war and it is bad, nobody wins from it ever.  You better believe if we strike on them they will retaliate and we will be in battle in another country.  The American people need to speak up and I for one am outraged.

online, formative assessments in the class

The online assessment is a very good tool.  The questions would come to our e-mail.  If you downloaded the google drive app to your phone and stayed logged in you would get an alert.  My problem is I would always log out.  Once you had the assignment or finshed the reading you could answer the questions.  I like doing homework in this manner because you could double check your answers.  Doctor Hamon kept the questions at a maximum 5-10 questions per assessment.  I also liked the fact that you just click submit and it was turned in.  The technology is here so we should use it.

Class Wiki

I like being able to go to the Wiki and see what assignments are due for the week.  To see the homework and be able to get it done in real time.  I also like being able to click on a link and look at a video or read a short paper and have the knowledge at my finger tips instead of reading a book.  It makes the class more interesting instead of traditional and boring.  This class uses technology and introduces us materiel in a way that is cutting edge and I rather enjoy it.  I love the Wiki.

Beautiful Day

It is a very beautiful Firday in Palm Beach County.  The sun is out and it is in the 90's today.  It does not look like any rain in the air either.  I spent the day helping my parents clean up their house.  I am exhausted now.  I wanted to go to the beach and perhaps do some homework.  It honestly does not look like that is going to happen.  I was going to go to dinner tonight but the way things are looking at the moment I think a shower and a nap is looking much more promising.  Not sure what you guys are going to do, but whatever you do, be safe and have fun.

Flipped Class

What do I like about the flipped classroom.  I love that I can go home and do what I need to do, then in class I am able to ask the questions.  We the students are able to compare thoughts at the same time and gain a better understanding of the materiel that was assigned for the week.  When we had questions we can ask each other.  Another good thing that we were able to do is blog and research data on our blog page, and get input from our classmates.  Flipped classroom gave us more time to do work in class if we did not have enough time to get it done during the week at home.  It also gave us more hands on from Professor Hamon.  He showed us so many new things and utilized many different techniques, he used modern technology, but did not reinvent the wheel.  He used resources that are already on the web and technology that is here such as google drive, google spaces, google docs, and showed us how to use them.  I love this flipped concept.

Blogging

I have really enjoyed this class this term.  I continue to learn new things from Dr. Hamon.  I am happy that I was able to get him again for a second quarter.  I met many new people in this class, and was even able to glimpse into the other English class.  I have gotten closer to my classmates without even having to open my mouth but through discussions.  This experience has been pretty amazing and I will continue to blog.

Doc 3

I think my paper is finally ready.  I think I have enough opinion backed up with evidence to prove my case.  I know my message will not convince everyone to change their minds about not whitening their teeth because, people are going to do what they want to do, but at least everyone will be informed before that make that decision and some people will decide not to do it.  I know very few of the naturalist who are all organic and refuse to put poison into their bodies will not whiten their teeth.  A few others who was considering it will think twice and a few more will not do it at all.  If I get 3 people to listen and not do it, then I feel my paper is a success.  Yes bleaching looks good but it is not good for you.

Statistics

I am actually taking statistics now so I have a new understanding of the subject matter.  I found out all kinds of interesting things.  Like for instance politicians how the skew data to make it appear any way they want it to look.  How they say they have reduced X% of the unemployment or reduced taxes, or reduced inflation.  They show charts that skew the data.  It looks good on paper however it is not a true representation.  Or they say that our country's GDP is one thing but they do not use Real GDP figures.  Or people use surveys and the sample is not a good samples of the population.  The size is not big enough, or they have one gender, or age group representing a large population of ages outside of that specific sample age group.  Plus things have to be scientific and go through a double blind study.  If the data can not be reproduced then it is not sound.  Many of the stuff we purchase is representative of an independent study, which really means that some company paid some lab to produce the results that they want.  My recommendation is do not believe anything that says independent studies and be cautious what and expert witness has to say.  There are many variables to everything, and all things should be considered when making decisions.

Knee Surgery

Yesterday I was very excited to have surgery.  I injured myself in the navy in 2006 and never got it repaired.  It was something I have been needing for a couple years and I kept putting it off until I could not run anymore.  I knew that I was damaging me knee more and more but I kept running on it.  Then it was bone on bone and I wound up hurting the good knee by running and favoring the bad one.  I was scheduled to have surgery on my right leg two weeks ago and it was rescheduled by the surgeon.  So yesterday I was thrilled to have the procedure.  What I did not expect was that the anesthesia would wear off right around 2 am.  Oh my God... I was in so much pain, and still am.  I am a big guy but today I feel like being a big baby.  I feel like someone just beat me up.

Sunday, August 18, 2013

By 1995, a survey of 8,143 dentists reported that 91% provided vital tooth bleaching in their dental practices (11). Seventy-nine percent of these dentists reported success with tooth whitening. Among the side effects reported by the respondents were the following: 62.2% noted tooth sensitivity 10.7% of the time; 45.9% reported soft tissue irritation 5.6% of the time, 2.1% noted systemic effects 0.2% of the time, and 18.8% reported no side effects.
Today scientists suggest they add five Percent potassium nitrate (KNO3) as a desensitizer and have the patient use a desensitizing toothpaste containing KNO3.
I suggest the patient also use a flouride rinse or tray treatment during the course of the procedure.
The article also suggest that recession hypersensitivity is no greater after the procedure than before.  As a clinician I have to totally disagree with this.  From my experience I have seen post bleaching hypersensitivity skyrocket.  Like they say in statistics you can get the data to say whatever you want it to say.  The truth is if you have recession (the roots of your teeth are exposed), and you bleach your teeth, you will get sensitivity.

Teeth Doc #3

Have I changed your minds about bleaching your teeth?  Have I convinced any of you not to do it yet? It is kinda like telling somene to quit smoking because it causes cancer.  Or to tell a pothead to stop smoking cancer because of the amount of carcinogens in marijuana when smoked and they will argue the medicinal benefits of the drug.  I get the same thing in the dental office about white teeth and it is all many people care about forget the side effects, complications, or risks associated with the procedure.  Yes I am going against the grain of my industry but part of my job is oral health education.  If I do not educate my patients with the truth, then what good am I doing you?

Pathos

Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.  Here is the best example I can give to Pathos.  This video will make you sad, and guilt you into donating to feed a kid for a year.  It shows hunger  and suffering as well as the difference your contribution can make.

Crest Whitening Strips. The real truth.

I have been doing my homework and I went to the Crest web page.  A couple years ago Crest Whitestrips were voted #1 for having the best bang for your bucks.  It is cheaper than going to your dentist and takes less time.  Active ingredient is peroxide.  I found some of their questions on their Q & A interesting:

  1. How long will whitening last?
  1. The length of time your teeth will stay whiter is influenced by several factors, including how often you drink coffee, tea, dark colas, red wine or smoke. Advanced Vivid & Professional Effects keep your teeth whiter for 12 months. If you are concerned about daily staining, keep your smile look bright and white with 3D White Stain Shield for only 5 minutes a day.
  1. Can I wear the strips longer than the instructed wear time to get better whitening results?
  1. We recommend following usage instructions for each product. Longer wear time can result in tooth sensitivity and/or gum discomfort.
Staining, all things you eat, chew, smoke, ingest will stain the teeth.  In fact, everything except water. The things mentioned in the first question  (Tea, tobacco, coke, betel nut, red wine, berries, coffee, marijuana, and certain medications like tetracycline) are all things that will leave heavy stain if consumed on a regular basis.  If you are whitening your teeth or not you can maintain white teeth if you simply brushed after consuming these items within 30 min.  After 30 min the stains left become permanent.  What your dentists/hygienist do not all ways tell you.

The second answer is a safe answer.  However you can get sensitivity even if you follow the instructions.  Some people are poor candidates for bleaching (thin enamel, recession, exposed roots, cavities, cracked or chipped teeth, exposed dentin, fluorosis, sensitivity prior to bleaching etc).  Bottom line everyone is different and this is not the magic bullet.  Does it work.  My answer is yes but every whitening product on the market works.  They all work do different degrees and different success rates with or without sensitivity for different people.  Why, because people are different and have different enamel densities.  Fact is overuse of any of these products will lead to sensitivity, sloughing of gum tissue (gingiva), and or weakened enamel making one more susceptible to cavities.

The choice is yours.  Do you really want to take on this risk?  Are the risks outweighing the benefits of whiter teeth?  I do not think so.  Another point you have to consider is the systemic affects on the body of you ingesting these chemicals and toxins through your mouth.  Is it really worth it?  For me?  Heck no!  Dentistry is however a business, and if you come to me knowing the risks involved, and you do not care, I will proceed to make your teeth as white as you want them.  I will charge you for it, then when you come back in pain, and you will.  I will charge you again to desensitize you teeth, fix your cracks, cavities, or put white fillings or veneers on for you and charge you for that as well.  That crack that could have gotten fixed prior to the bleaching now needs a root canal, possibly a build up and crown as well to stop the pain.  I am going to get rich off of your new problems.  Is it worth it to you?  The choice is still yours.

Tooth Whitening

Everyone wants white teeth.  Everyone wants a bright smile but like everything else in life, no pain, no gain.  There are side affects to bleaching and whitening your teeth.  Most people do not know or they find out the hard way.  All of the products you get over the counter has a warning on them that says may cause sensitivity.  The turth is most of them do or will cause sensitivity.  Another truth about whitening is that that process removes or damages your enamel in the process.  The reason for so many product that will whiten your teeth is there are so many uninformed people.  People that demand whiter teeth.  Many people will pay for the whitening treatment over having more urgent required treatments.  They rather deal with the pain and suffer than to have a filling or root canal.  I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and personally I will never whiten my own teeth.  From time to time I will purchase a multi hybrid cleaning tooth paste gel but that is rare (because I can not find the regular gel).  Many will ask the question does this stuff work?  They all work to a degree, what you have to look for is the concentration.  They have things from 1%-40% strengths.  Priced from $5-%$1000 (in office treatments).  The proper treatment is hit and miss and often times you do not get what you pay for or should I say you can get better results in less time and less money but I am not telling how.  My stance is you should not do it.  It is bad for you.  Now after I tell you this and you still decide you want it, then its business... Pay me and I will get your teeth as white as you want them.

Higher Education

I read an article from yahoo news this morning suggesting that there are degrees that limit your career opportunities.  The citation from the article was taken from the 2012-3013 Department of Labor statistics and a 2013 Georgetown Study called "Hard Times".  The "four degrees that can ruin your career chances", are as follows:  Economics, Political Science and Government, Information Systems, and Architechure.  Economics unemployment rate was 10.4% an alternative was to go into finance instead.  Political Science unemployment rate was 11.1% and suggested criminal justice instead.  Information Systems unemployment rate was 14.7% and suggested computer science as a better alternative.  Architechure unemployment rate was 12/8% and said civil engineer was a better choice.I though it was good information after our doc. 3 assignment.  Here is the link to the article:  http://education.yahoo.net/articles/degrees_with_poor_job_prospects.htm?kid=1O16C

Today

Today was a very lazy day.  I slept most of the day away.  I think my body finally crashed and I took some much needed rest.  Now I am up doing my homework.  No football for me tonight.  I will catch up online tomorrow to see how my teams fared.  I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend.

Volunteering

I love to volunteer.  I love making someone other than myself feel good.  I love making people smile but more importnatly, I love to let people know that I care.  About two months ago I decided to get my friends involved in volunteering.  I decided to reach out to my FaceBook circle of frineds.  We did a build with Habitat for Humanity.  I know people like to have fun so I decided to make it a social event (an excuse to get together once a month and catch up).
Since the first even we actually started a web page on FaceBook called, "We Care".  It is open to everyone now, but the cool thing is we are not reinventing the wheel we are helping other nonprofits.  We provide labor and bodies.  We feed the homeless, and help those in need as a group.
If anyone need to volunteer, do community service, or really want to volunteer and meet some really cool people, let me know.  Look for the smiley face log with the puzzle pieces.  They represent the different colors of humanity coming together.  You can be part of that puzzle to show the world that "We Care".

Writing with authority

I have learned that writing with authority backs up your research.  It makes your paper valid.  It is not just your opinion when you put a more professional expert behind your paper/argument.  Writing with authority is a two part equation.  You have to do the research but the second part is citation.  There are many ways to do it but if it is not performed correctly then it is incorrect.  I am glad professor Hamon took time to show me my mistakes.  I feel this will make be a better writer for sure in the future.

Busy Days

There seems to be so many things to do and never enough time to do it all.  Today it looks like I will need a week to accomplish all the things I need to get done.  I have to go to the courhouse register for a business, look for a new apartment,  give notict to my current apartment in writing stating I plan on moving, study for two exams next week, write three papers, renew my tag for my car before my birthday, renew my Hygiene license and my Assistant license, then contact my friends to do some research for a community service project that I volunteered for.  I am going to be one brain fried person before the day is over.  Time to get a move on.

Fallacies

Today I learned in class that fallacies have to be arguable.  I did not know to what degree but it pretty much has to be this v.s. that.  I also learned that many people in my class share my views about higher education.  I am enjoying this class.  I hope that you guys are also.

Deductive vs. Incuctive

This video explains the difference.  I know last week in class we had some different understandings.  Tess inspired me to post a video.  I think this explains the differences clearly.  Enjoy.

Cloud 2

Yesterday I was reading other people blogs and I came across Tess page and she had a video on her page that explained the cloud.  It was very informative.  The advances and possibilities that we can do with this technology is limitless, and it seems to keep getting better.  I am happy that I am taking this class and learning new tricks not just from Professor Hamon but from each other as well.  If you want to know what the cloud is, allow me to redirect you to Tess' page.

Cloud

The cloud is great technology.  I think it is great to be able to keep documents in a cloud.  I am sll for it but the dark side of any web based technology is security.  Identity theft and hackers are the things that worry me the most.  I think it is incredible to be able to save your computer storage to google backup or some other storage device that keeps your documents for you free of charge.  I love the fact that we can share documents, pictures, videos, and other media formats online.  The only problem is how we share this information, and who we choose to share things with.

Higher Education

I have found out that the better paying jobs that have the more bang for thier buck is actually the ones that require on the Job training.  The conventional way of thinking is to do what were all doing now.  Go to school, get the degree, get the dream job and become rich.  That way of thinking is not always true.  Many people with degrees are not even working in their degree fields.  Some are unemployed or doing jobs that meet lasser qualifications than what they have.  Many people who have degrees spend 10 years or more just to pay back college debt.  It is sad and discouraging how that works.  The price of higher education is a costly one.  Think about the return on your envestment and the sacrifices in time to achieve a degree.  Some degrees yield big time payoffs, others not so much.

Is a higher education really needed.

What do you think about the new writing assignment?  I have my own opinion about the writing assignment.  I really think with the changes in times and economy has affected the needs for highter educationl.  The level of education after high school is required for some jobs but not to measure success or the ability to do a job well.  I know may well educated people with poor people skills or common sense.  I also know uneducated people that are very successful, many of the more famous people in our society do not have a college education.  I am not saying it is a bad thing or a waste of time. Rarely do you just become an engineer, or rocket scientist without some higher education or understanding.  However you do need some experience and most jobs now they want people with experience over a degree.  Even in management people hire and want people that can get results, managers of resources, to get the bigger bang for thier buck.  Not just a degree on the wall.  How do you feel?

Deforestation

What is your opinion or feelings on the subject of deforestation?  I am getting ready to do a paper on the subject and would like to see how people feel.  I have learned so much on the topic in the last couple days that it is making my head spin already.  The biggest thing that I found out is that just like we pay for water eventually we will have to pay countries like Brazil and Africa not to cut down their trees.  That means we or perhaps our kids will have to pay for fresh air.  Crazy when you think about it, but those trees are the filters and what protects us from the green house gases, and gives us oxygen.  For now they are cutting and clearing forests like crazy, with modern technology things are more efficient, effective, and productive.  From 6 acres to 20 in a day.  The land is being developed on or farmed on.  Erosion occurs, and when the trees are all gone, the people who moved to those areas to have a better life,  no longer have food, money, or other resources to live.  The area become towns of poverty and famine all over again.

My head is in the clouds.

Blogging in the cloud.  I love the cloud as long as it never goes down.  It is a unlimited storage and hopefully it never goes down.  I am sure there are massive battery backups and backup storage facilities.  It is amazing though when you think about how massive old computers were in the past.  They took up entire buildings, entire rooms, now we have thumb drives that store more information than the entire first computers.  I remember when calculators were super expensive also, now they are only $1.00.  Now there is a cloud where we do not have to waste any of our own computer storage, and things are saved forever.  The google apps allow us to do just about everything for free including making phone calls.  I love Google, and their applications are awesome.  I love it.

More Blogging

I have had an opportunity to see other people blogs in class.  It is interesting to see what other people think.  It is also nice to recieve input from others.  I get to write my thoughts and share them with my peers, but I also get to see their feedback as well.
I just started using google blog last semmester and I am continuing to learn more about this and how to use the blogger.  There are so many tricks and tools on google.  I have yet to learn all of the tools and tricks.  Look at the tool bar on the post page and see all the edit icons.  How many have you used to blog?  If you have not used these tools I challenge you to start using them.  I think my new goal is to start using these icons.  Let's see what they do, shall we?

DMV

This morning I spent over three hours to try to register my vehicles.  It is always a long experience in that place.  I have two vehicles and a jet ski with a trailer. I registered my car a couple months ago, and the DMV input it into the computer wrong.  So since January I have had a license plate on my car under the wrong name but was registered somewhere else under my name.  I actually had three profiles in the FL DMV.  So when I tried to register my SUV red flags went up when I mentioned my car.  I was there forever I got so angry that I could not waste more time to register the jetski and trailer.  I was a little angry on my way to class this morning.  I know it was a mistake, but it makes me wonder how it happened?  What would have happened if I got pulled over?

My Blogging thoughts.

As previously stated, I think blogging is fun.  I like to write.  I think it gives us the students to share our thoughts and get feedback.  It also allows us to create our writing voice.  We all have different techniques and styles.  Blogging gives us an opportunity to express our individuality and personality.  I think it is great also because we are not graded in traditional terms.  We are given an opportunity to express ourselves and comment on our peers.  Is blogging valuable?  I would say yes.  Yes because we practice our writing skills.  We can change our technique to suit our audience.  Our audience being our peers or our instructors.  I say we should keep blogging.

Writing rules

I am glad that we are allowed to use words like I, and we in our writing assignments.  I feel like I have an opinion.  I believe we as a collective share common beliefs and we have a voice to be heard.  I am happy that we have a teacher like Dr. Hamon.  He is trendy, modern, and hip to new teaching techniques.  I actually enjoy going to English class, where in the past I cringed at the words "English Class".

Blogging for class

I know I have not introduced myself to the class yet but I am 6ft 5in, Shrek look alike (brown not green), and sit in the front row.  I am Anthony.  It is fun to blog for class, and to be viewed by your peers.  I think it is a great way for us to get to know each other.  I found out last quarter that it forces us to communicate, and we find out things about others that we never would have known.  I love the feedback as well.  Sometimes the bolg opens your eyes to a different perspective.  It also allows you to debate things you are sincere about.  I am sure there will be some topics that we can all agree to disagree about but like Dr. Hamon said, we have to be respectful adults here.  I am looking forward to taking this journey with you.

Blogging

I learned how to blog last quarter.  I did not know how to set up a blog page, nor did I know about all the fun stuff google had to offer.  I am so happy that I took Comp II with Dr.  Hamon.  He not only taught us how to blog but also showed us the Google Drive, and google tools.  Some of the ones he showed us last class.  I am learning more and more about that program.  I think it is way better than microsoft office and for the price of free, there is nothing to compare.  I enjoyed the last class and I am sure I will enjoy this one as well.

Something About You

You take my breath away
It is hard to breathe because my heart is pounding
I get tong tied
You beauty is astounding

Your smell
Your pheromones are enticing
You beauty is enchanting
Your eyes are romancing

You are so pure
Beauty in its rarest form
Your smile is magical
Your voice carries so much charm

One look from you and I become mesmerized
One touch from you and I am paralyzed
One brush of you and I am mush
One kiss from you and I am mush

I am helpless under your spell
I am defenseless to your beauty, to your touch to your smell
You are so, fabulous and exotic
So beautiful, how could this not be erotic

I feel like a kid
Like this is puppy love
You make me stutter
You make my heart flutter

I don’t know what I did to deserve you
I did not start living until I met you
Now I found happiness, and joy
Everything I ever wanted, the real McCoy.

I survived

Well last night I decided to take on my nieces.  The ages range from 10-7.  I initially planned on having three and wound up with 4.  I had big plans for them but things do not always work as planned so last night I felt like I was in the military again.  There was a ton of improvising and compromising going on.  Girls especially little ones require tons of attention and coaching.  They get together and become ADHD no attention span just buzzing full of energy like a hive of bees before they swarm.  I really did enjoy them but they are a hand full.  It gave me an opportunity to get to know them more, and for us to bond.  I missed out on most of their lives so I had a ton of catching up to do.  They all lit up when I said, "you can have as much junk food as you want, no curfew, you can jump on the furniture, and that the only rule is have fun."  It was a long night but we all had fun and now I can rest.

Last Day of finals

Today has turned out to be a good day.  I was so worried about my last test and my final exam.  I spent all day studying and most of the day today doing the same thing.  I took a break to eat and watch the game last night.
I have a week off to rest and have fun.  I want to go to Canada this week but the flights are probably going to be outrageous.  I made plans to babysit my nieces and have a girls night at my house on friday evening and I do not want to disappoint my girls, but I also want to leave.  I know that is bad and I feel guilty if I leave but I do not know when I will be able to make a trip again until the end of nex quarter.  I can have the girls over any weekend.  As bad as I want to leave I think I will do the right thing, suck it up, and spend some time with my nieces.  They better not ask me to wear any nail polish though.  There will not be any dressing up in princess costumes for me either but I will have a tea party with them.
My plan:
  • Home made pizza
  • As much ice cream they can eat
  • Baking brownies or cupcakes
  • Dance revolution on the big screen
  • Movies
  • Dollar store to by toys
  • Next morning junk food pancakes (every sweet topping I can find)
  • Toys R Us  purchase the loudest toys I can find and give them back to their mothers.
Fun sleepover with uncle Anthony....

p.s. I will keep my blog page open.  Please keep in touch.  It was a pleasure being in with you all.

Class Experiences

The first day I walked into class I was really intimidated.  Not by the instructor, nor the students, not even by the subject.  I was more in awe of the class size.  There were only 5-6 people in the class.  I was shocked.  I was told the class sizes were small but I never imagined... I think other than the learning experience of the course itself.  I learned about the people in the class.  Developed some new freindships.  I see many of us came out of our shells.  I learned many aspects of other people lives, values, and differences.  This blogger is a powerful tool.  I say that not just as a writing instrument but as a communication devise between individuals that I perhaps would have know nothing about other than they are in my English class.

You are my everything

When I think of you
The sky is no longer blue
You brighten up my day
Take away all things that are grey

You are the one for me
You are all I will ever need
You are my everything
You are my everything

I never imagined that I would have feelings like this
I never knew my life could be filled with such bliss
I never thought I could be loved
You are all I think of

I can never get tired of telling you
How much I really care
How I will always be there
How much I desire
How you sat my heart on fire
How much you inspire
How much passion you bring out of me
How much I love to be
To be with you.....

You are the one for me
You are all I will ever need
You are my everything
You are my everything

You make my heart race
May passing rage
This bird has left its cage...
Like a river my love flows
Like a fire fly my body glows
Like a baby our love grows
Only God knows

I am so Blessed to have you as mine
You heavenly and divine
Your body was crafted for me
A perfect fit and you adore meYou are the one for me
You are all I will ever need
You are my everything
You are my everything

You make me feel special
You make me feel happy
You make me feel loved
You are the one I think of.

When I am down
All I need to do is hear the sound
Sound of your voice
And my sorrow becomes rejoiced

Your touch is magical
You do not just sooth
You do not just caress
Your touch is the best
Your touch makes me want to undress

You are the one for me
You are all I will ever need
You are my everything
You are my everything

Google Tools

I can not stop talking about google now.  I have told all of my friends about google and Google Drive.  I love this software. The only thing I do not like is using it with my phone.  My phone has this autocorrect feature on it that I can't stand.  It changes what I say all the time and when I text it says things I did not mean for it to say.  Words substitute and I look like an idiot.  I like the fact that I can connect with my phone, but my fingers are so big it makes it difficult to type or swipe.  I sometimes use the voice (Talk to Text) feature but it also has a mind of its own.
I am really excited about how user friendly google is.  I am also super excited because the days of upgrading software from Microsoft Office for $200-$600 is over for me.  This program is a life saver.  I love it.

Terms I learned in class

Tone, we can tell tone by certain accents and punctuations.  It is part of our language, and writing style.  We can make out the meaning of some things just by knowing this.  Even if the person writing does not make any sense at all.
Setting, answers the where, who, what, and when.
Symbolism, things that appear to be one thing but mean something totally different.  Things that represent something used in writing that have abstract meanings or a double meaning.  The biggest example of this was in a Rose for Emily.  That rose itself, the thing that never appeared anywhere in the stoy except the title.  The things that rose represented (Sorrow, Pitty, and the fact that everything about Emily had a stinch on it).  The author decided she still deserved a rose.

A day studying

Yesterday I went to the beach.  The weather out west looked bad and I noticed it was raining.  I could hear the thunder and see the lightening.  I could also smell the rain.  Funny how you can only do that in Florida.  When I looked east towards the ocean it was crystal clear.  Sunshine and all.  So I loaded up the car and went to the beach.  It was low tide, and it was very quiet.  I went to the Mcarthur Park not the public beach.  I brought my books to study.  Everything was perfect.  My setting, was quiet and peaceful.  The waves were crashing in the background.  There was a slight overcast, so it was not to hot.  Everything was tranquil.  I also brought some corona.  I wanted to be like the people on the commercials.  The only problem with the entire set up is I have a low tolerance to beer.  I packed 6 bottles in my little cooler.  By the time I drank two beers I was slightly intoxicated and had a headache.  Moral to this story is to know your limitations, and stick to them, no matter what the setting is.
The things that I found very interesting about the poems we read in class are:  Some of the do not rhyme at all, others you need to know key terms to understand what they mean.  The women tend to write about passion, love, lust, and society.  The men wrote in the abstract, or about things they were passionate about.  The men wrote about nature, hunting, and dark things.  I found it ironic that William Frost wrote a poem about fire and ice, and his last name is Frost.

Symbols All around me

There are so many symbols.  From red lights, to stop signs, to the alphabet on our key board.  Symbols are short hand writings that have meaning.  Look at the ancient pyramids.  They have symbols that told their story.  Before Egyptians had their hyroglyphs there were cuneioform writings.  Today there is standard short hand and sign language.  Some people are iliterate and can not read at all, but they understand the symbols around them.  They are actually pretty smart just have not learned the alphabet symbols.  Chinese and Japanese are languages with over 300 symbols and characters and they have 2-3 meanings depending on the accent or way it is used in context.  Symbols are pretty easy once you know what they stand for.

Symbol someone else carry

All I can think of is my friend.  She has this blanket with a Ragley Ann and Andy print all over it.  I think this thing is more than dated and ugly.  I was actually making fun of it before I found out what it meant to her.  She has had this thing since she was a baby.  It was her first blanket.  Where she is from it is a tradition.  She says not only that but it reminds her of her father.  He tucked her in at night under this blanket.  After hearing this I understood.  I felt not so tall but, as small as a golf ball.  I understand now.  The symbolism and importnace that this blanket has in her life.

Computer Class

I feel lost in my basic computer course.  I actually feel like most of the people in that class is lost.  I do not think anyone is passing that course at midterm.  The tests are fair but the quizes leave you guessing where is the materiel coming from.  It does not come from our lectures for sure.  I was told, "it is in the book."  My question is what book?  Where in the book?  I am constantly looking and feeling confused.  I am sure all of my classmates feel the same way.  I hope things change.  Intially I figured this is going to be an easy A, well it is not.  Total opposite.  I not usually one to complain nor vent.  However this weekend I will be face down in the book for sure.  I think I will just try to read the entire section on Excel.

Symbolism in my life

Symbols that I have in my life.  The one that comes to mind first is the Holy Cross.  From a youth I was brought up in the church.  I am a believer in God.  I believe in Jesus Christ.  I know that there is powers on this planet that science have yet to explain.  That crucifix is symbolic but has power.  Like so many other people I have watched shows like the exorcist growing up.  I have heard stories of demonic possessions.  It wasn't till I was in high school working for the Diocese of Palm Beach until I started believing in that stuff.   Encountered a little boy for Belle Glade that was possessed.  I will never forget that kid.  Then in August/September I seen one appear in Riviera beach in family friends house.  It started out as a small light (orb like).  Before it disappeared it was bigger and more visible.  I thought it was a light show or trick at first because you could pass your hand around it, over it, through it.  Light with no heat but it had definite shape.  It was a cross and it was suspended.  I did some research and this phenomenon is actually common.  Ripley's believe it or not science team could not explain it.  Nor can I.  One point for God.

Do you need a man?

Just to share the poetic side of myself with my peers.  I was having fun and decided to write and share this with you guys.

DO YOU NEED A MAN?

You need a real man to grab you by the back of your neck
Pulling you close to him
Delivering a passionate kiss
Sucking the breath out of you like an incubus

You need a man that would make love to you real slow
One to leave you trembling when he lets you go
Confused by what just took place
All you can do is stare into his face

You need a man
One that takes care of dinner arrangements and after plans
You deserve the best, the best candidate
One that your friends and parents would approve you to date

You need a man that would stimulate your mental stamina
Test your mind and heart parameter
One that is willing to give you PDA
One that is willing to put you on display

You need a man that will pick up the slack
You need a man that will have your back
Someone that will listen and share long talks
One that would hold your hand and take long walks

You need a man that will take you on vacations
A man that has a career not an occupation
You need a man that is strong
One willing to be 50 shades all year long

You need a man, one that is a partner and a friend
I am right under your nose, Stop looking!
You need a man both sensitive and sincere
You need a man who communicates, crystal clear

You need a man to be more than just a boo
You need a man to do the things I will do
The things I will do for you
The things I will do with you

You need a man.
Any man won’t do
You need a man
Unfortunately, No man good enough for you.....
Unfortunately, I am not the man for you...

Saturday

This morning I woke up super early to go to my nieces graduation.  I am very proud of this young lady.  She graduated with High Honors and had a GPA of 5.1 on a 4.0 scale.  I woke up grumpy because I had to drive to Port St. Lucie and be there by 7:30.  I was like who has ceremonies that early in the morning and why?  Its Saturday.  I talked to one of the sheriffs working the event.  He said he will be there all day from 6am until after 10pm tonight.  There are going to be 4 graduations and another event tonight after all the schools leave.  I was like well I guess I should not complain about getting up and making that drive.  At least I get to go home after this ceremony is over.

Literary Voice

Literary voice is the perspective that the story is told.  Illustrations are not always from the author's point of view.  Sometimes stories are told in the:
First Person (one person or a group of people as one person) the I, me, mine, he, hers, she, ours or we.
Second Person you and yours and is rarely seen
Third Person (the fly on the wall)  Omniscient point of view.  The Authors' voice narrates the story.
Other important points are:
Style:  Details or Direction and Syntax or Images used to paint a picture and tell a story.
Tone:  Gives characters attitude.  Shows emotions of characters.
Dialogue:  1.  Monologue:  One person gives a long speech.
                  2.  Soliloquy:  One person alone on stage.
                  3.  Side:  Statement made to the audience alone and the rest of the characters are not supposed to hear what is said.
Setting:  Time or Place things happen in the story.  Setting can be realistic or Abstract
Theme:  Central idea of the play.

These elements form the voice of literature.

TRIFLES

In this play the setting is 1900.  Women did not have the right to vote nor did they have a voice.  There was no women's rights nor equality.  The setting took place on a farm inside of an old house.  Telephones were invented still being invented in the early 1870's and were not marketed until the end of the 1870's. 1885 is when the modern gasoline engine care was created although steam powered car were around since 1769.   TV's were invented in in 1908, 8 years after this story took place.  So this gives you an idea of the times.  Things were not modern.  People farmed for a living and life was not simple.  People worked hard.
Mrs. Wright although innocent until proven guilty.  Is guilty of strangling her husband to death with a rope while he slept.  No matter if she was or not according to the men in this story she was guilty.  Actually the women knew she was guilty also but sympathized with her.
The Rope itself is a symbol of the abusive husband choking the life out of Mrs Wright.  Apparently Mrs. Wright had a good singing voice.  She could stitch or knot and was beautiful when she was younger.  I am sure she imagined a very different life for herself.  She wound up living and working on a farm.  Being married to a hard and harsh husband.  She was social when she was younger but not so much as an adult.  She never had kids, and back then you were considered less than a woman if you did not have a boy.  To not have kids at all was worse.  Even Mrs.  Hale mentions that without kids lead to a quiet house.
The men thought what kind of woman could do such a thing?  Not have any remorse for her actions and she is lying about it.  They criticize her home cleaning for not being up to par.  They also mention how they let the preserves go bad.  How can she be a house wife and knot (stitch so poorly), keep a filth house, and an empty bird cage?  The bird was assumed to be killed by having his neck broken by Mr.  Wright.  Also.
The women.  Mrs.  Peters and Mrs. Hale find the bird dead inside the box, wrapped in cloth.  I think the bird represents not Mr. Wright but Mrs. Wright.  Although Mrs. Wright retaliated by strangling her husband neck because he broke the birds neck.  The bird however is Mrs. Peters.  She is in the cage.  She is finally free out of the cage when her husband dies.  He sucked the life out of her and finally she is free of his beatings and his cage.  Mrs. Hale regrets not visiting, and realize she is also lonely.  Even with kids, she longs for female company.  She also may have a harsh or non communicating husband.

PEER REVIEW

I like the feedback I am receiving from my classmates.  However I have not yet tested the use of my peers for my paper.  After I share and publish my paper with my peers I am sure I will get feedback.  Positive and negative.  Corrective criticism is welcomed, as a work in progress all help is welcome.  I look forward to what I learn and any point of view of things I am missing.

THE THINGS I CARRY WITH ME

There are tree things that I always cary with me.  One is my keys, the second is at least one piece of identification, and finally epinephrine.  I always need my keys and I am sure everyone carry their keys at all times.  The identification thing is instilled in me since age 15.  You never know what can happen to you at any given moment.  Without identification,  no hospital can find out who you are to identify you or your next to kin.  Especially if your finger prints are not in any database.  I also usually have in epi pen in my backpack or in the armrest of my car.  I have a severe anaphylactic allergic reaction to iodine.

A Rose for Emily

I read the story and I missed out on many points that we discussed in class.  I realized that this critical reading is deeper than I imagined.  I realized that the title has significant meaning and roles in the short stories.  So does the setting, times and dates which the stories were written.  I also realized that the symbolism and perception of not just the author but also the characters within the story are also critical factors.
I did not realize that a rose had never been mentioned in the text only the title.  I did not know what the rose meant.  How many ways we could look at the rose itself.  I now see that the rose is beautiful when blossomed.  What makes a rose beautiful is the quality of nutrients of the dirt it grows in and the amount of sunshine.  The dirt was Mrs. Emily.  She was a bad woman.  She was crazy, she committed murder, she also slept with a dead body for years.  Prior to that she wanted to keep her fathers remains as well.  She did not see her father as a dead person and probably did not see the love of her life as dead either.
She also represented the old southern way of living.  The hierarchy of upperclass white people and family names of the south having value.  The Old Confederacy Nobility she had the snobby attitude that went with it.  She refused to pay taxes.  Although the war was over and times had changed, she clung to that way of life.  Not only did she smell bad but so was her attitude/personality.
The rose like anything else when it is cut it  begin to die.  Emily was cut after her fathers death.  She lost it.  She lost everything and begin to cling to everything like a hoarder.  A rose is beautiful but it has thorns and if you grab the rose it will prick you.  Just like Emily.  A rose is also given to the dead, and the flower of choice at funerals.  A rose is fitting to be given to Emily at her death, for living such a pitiful life.

That thing is huge!

Two nights ago I went to the beach to clear my head, and smell the fresh salt air. I still have that Navy in my blood. I have always been drawn to the ocean. I remember in highschool I would go to the beach and just listen to the sound of the waves and sometimes fall asleep there all night long. When I was on the ship I looked at the ocen every morning to give thanks for the day and watch the sun rise. I looked at the waves every night that I could before I went to bed also. So the other night I was walking and saw a huge object moving on the beach. I thought at first it was a beached whale. Then, I said, "it looks more like a shark." I have never seen a shark that big before but I could see that this thing had a large body. It was about the size of a Fiat or Mini Cooper. I could make out the sand moving and what looked like a tail flapping. I kept my distance. Although this animal clarly looked beached I was taking no chances with it. It could be hurt. My eyes had not yet adjusted. I took my phone out and turnd on the flashlight application. I got a bit of courage and walked closer to investigate. Something I never do. The I realized what it was. There it was, the biggest sea turtle I have ever seen. This mom was digging her nest to lay her eggs. I never knew how big these things were.

What is that?

One thing about me, is I am a big guy but I will switch on the panic button in a heart beat. In most instances it served me well. In some instances I am totally cool and calm. However we were snorkeling and the view was amazing. Literally like being in an aquarium, so nice so tranquil, so beautiful on the reef. All of a sudden I look behind me about 20 feet below. I see this gray figure. I asked myself, "what is that". Then it moved. I instantly knew what it was. A 7 foot shark. Cool and calm Anthony did not exist anymore. I will be honest, I screamed shark and scrambled to get back into the boat. There was another person in the water with me. I assumed he did not hear me the first two times I said Shark. I zoomed past him apparently pushing him out of the way. I think I know how Jesus and Chris Angel did it now (exaggerating a little, but not much). I walked on water more like ran, and jumped in the boat flippers on and all. I banged my knee up pretty good but I still have my legs. I then got my friend out of the water as the rest of my party laughed at me and then I was told that it was the wrong thing for me to do. For the record, if I see a bear, I will not play dead either. He has to work for his food. I am running. Catch me if you can. I have already put that scenario to the test. I am still here, and that is another story all together.

Key West Part 2

Yesterday Sat 26 May 2013, we went to the state park where the old 7 mile bridge starts. It was amazing. walked up the trail to the top and looked over this amazing structure designed by Henry Flagler. A train track with an road built on the top of it. It is impressively amazing. When I arrived at the top of the bridge there were hundreds of tarpons in the water. It was amazing. I was unaware that they were mouth breathers and initially thought it was a school of dolphins. After our amazing view we all walked down to the beach and the view was even more amazing. White sands, crystal clear water, and very shallow waters. It was perfect for snorkeling, so I did. I saw a sting ray, a conch, a barracuda, some small fish, parrot fish, and a yellow tail. It was awesome. It is amazing the beauty in Key west. This place is paradise.

MY FIRST TIME IN KEY WEST

I have never been to the Florida Keys. I decided that I would take an opportunity to come down for the long weekend, and celebrate an old friends birthday. I realized a couple things here in the keys: I am not in West Palm Beach anymore. This place is beautiful, very hot, and does not rain as much until a Hurricane comes. The water is clear (little to no seaweed). Also the water is fairly shallow and does not drop off for 50-100 yards around some of the islands. There are a ton of islands, and that 7mile bridge is awesome.
I grew up in FL but never came down as a kid. When I joined the Navy I had an opportunity to be stationed here but turned it down to go to Paris Island (it sounds more tropical, exotic, and beautiful). I should have researched it before I agreed to it. Unfortunately google did not exist back then. Paris Island is in the swamps of South Carolina. It is also where the Marines on the east of the Mississippi go to basic training. Let's just say it is not beautiful, nice, nor paradise. The total opposite and if you are in the military, one of the worst places to live.
So finally I am in the keys. I am with good people, and plan on having a great weekend. Boating, Fishing, Dancing and finding time to get my homework assignments completed. Wish me luck with fitting it all in.

MY FIRST CLASS POST

This is my very first blog.  I generally dislike English Literature honestly.  So far though I am learning more than I thought I would.  I know I have to try hard because this is my second worst subject next to Chemistry.  I have set a goal to do better.  My teacher is cool, and the very first night sowed us tricks and tools to use on google that are better than Microsoft Office.  The best part about it is this stuff is all free.  What is even more important he is teaching us how to use these programs.  I would have never even attempted to blog before.  Nor would I have known about google drive.  I admit I have read some interesting stories that have made me do some serious critical thinking, but that is what this class is about.  At the same time I am taking a computer class and learning just as much in this class about google programs than I am in word.  One thing for sure when I get ready for the real world my computing skills will be up to par.
